Many of the Goldfields major attractions are within an hours easy drive of Porcupine Township. You can visit Maldon and the other major regional cities, all with a wealth of historic and heritage attractions. Go shopping, try restaurants and wineries, explore historic sites and perhaps even find your own piece of gold!
National Trust protected buildings
Maldon, with its gold mining history and its unspoilt 1860s streetscape was declared by the National Trust to be Australia's "First Notable Town". Visit Historic Maldon, once the centre of gold mining activities in Victoria and reeputed to be the site of the world's richest goldfields in the 1850's.
Maldon goldfields and gold mining
Victoria's Central Goldfields are the location of many legendary goldfields and goldfields characters. Ask about the "Welsh Swagman" a well known identity in Maldon in the late 1860s.

Visit and tour the old Maldon gold mine, "Carman's Tunnel" and visit nearby to Porcupine Township the site of the current Maldon gold mine.
Things to do in Maldon


Travel on an old steam train operated by the Victorian Goldfields Railway.The railway is running steam powered trains from Maldon to Castlemaine and operates weekends, Wednesdays and public holidays. Take the train and visit Castlemaine then return to Maldon.
Maldon and its surroundsCastlemaine is the administration centre for the Mount Alexander Shire and is also an historic gold mining centre. Once called Forest Creek it was the site of many alluvial goldmines in the the 1850s.
